When Time Flys By

The last few weeks have been some very busy teaching weeks. We are continuing our plans for the symposium on Sustainability Competencies in higher education that will be held at Umeå Univeristy in 2024. If you are interested in the event, send in an abstract of your project by the end of the month.

On the project, we have been creating opportunities to upscale our activites at a new level. A larger part of the work has been to continue dialogue with the magnificent supporters that show up every time to contribute to the activities we are creating together. Most of all, we would like to thank Dr. Jos Eussen, who we have been talking with to contribute to an exciting new project Jos has been planning and is about to put into action in the new year. It was great to catch up and hear about the progress with this great transformation project. We look forward to helping out with the sustainability competence mindset map and to create further exchange of support as we move forward.

We have also begun our journey with three different student groups in England at Liverpool Business school at Liverpool John Mores University. Thank you to Program Leader Victoria McCall and Senior Lecturer Julie Marshall for taking part in this project. We look forward to gaining feedback from the MBA and executive students and hearing about your experiences with the Sustainability Competence Mindset map and the activities you facilitated with the students.

Meanwhile, I have been testing out some new activities with the new students we have at USBE this year. The first years were very active in the values activity that helped to encourage team understanding and self-awareness. They also took an experiential walk around town, guided by an online mobile app with stimulating reflection questions/statements, to reflect on their experience of sustainable and unsustainable activities in the community.

The walk took them around town to pass by different environments and lead them to their final destination, the art museum. Lastly, the students interviewed an organisation to reflect on the organisations’ sustainability missions, goals and strategies as well as how the employees explain their activities through the sustainability perspective. I am now reading the students’ reflection papers and learning about the wonderfully diverse human beings we have joining us this year. Thank you to everyone who took part. I am really looking forward to meeting you all again soon.

Reflection questions this week: What activities have been consuming most of your time in the last few weeks? Have you learnt any new multi-tasking tips and tricks? How do you make space for creativity and innovation in teaching?
