Autumn Term Begins: Communication across disciplines

Last week, our team presented the project on the other side of campus. An invitation of Tom Korsman offered us the opportunity to speak at a pedagogical seminar about our project with environmental scientists, ecologists, and geoscientists. We recognized that effective communication with students, as well as fostering meaningful connections across disciplinary boundaries, has posed significant challenges for many within our academic community.

It was within this context that our encounter with the natural science departments proved invaluable. The exchange of ideas, experiences and insights has opened for new dialogue and confirmed existing challenges across disciplines. With open hearts and open minds, the experience fuelled our passion and invigorated our resolve to continue our pursuit of teaching excellence for sustainability. It reinforced the importance of collaboration, reminding us that by working together, we can create a more sustainable future for generations to come.

This week, we were also invited to meet students on the environmental science master program that has a focus on sustainable development. The students have taken part in the sustainability competence mindset map and we will support teachers on the program to help facilitate the student learning experience. We look forward to following the students along their learning experience on the program and to learn from the experience ourselves.

It would be nice to hear about your work for sustainbility and any plans you might have for the coming semster. What sustainability plans do you have for your students? Do you have any plans to include sustainability in your research? Are there any collaborations with the local community and transformations for sustainability?

P.S. Thank you for a recommndation this summer to read Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus . It is a really good read; funny, intersting and sometimes a little shocking. Most of all, the book promotes equality and equity and advocates for an education for sustainability on many occasions. It crosses disciplines by using the art of literature to discuss challenges in society, while using chemistry as the main character teaches through cooking. An interesting perspective and well worth a read.
