About

Hi Everyone!
I am Geetha from the University of Glasgow, Adam Smith Business School, where I have worked for 9 years. I have also worked in other Universities in the UK. Before that, I worked in sunny Sri Lanka, where I was born and grew up. My research interests have moved from banking to development economics to pedagogy. I enjoy exploring interactive learning, multicultural skill development, authentic assessments, and inner feedback generation. I have held leadership roles which champion equality diversity and inclusion as well as responsible sustainable management and education. What excites me most in being part of this project is that we are showing by example how people around the world can get together in taking action individually and collectively to make the world better and more sustainable.
My Values
One’s values evolve over time and I hope mine are for the better. Reflecting upon what I consider my values as well as what others who know me have told me, I would say the following: be supportive, be positive and have hope, give the benefit of doubt, stand up for what is right and for others, diplomatic (not sure if this a value, but my style is non-combative), work hard to inspire the next generation.
Our Story
The University of Glasgow Sustainability Challenge, organised by the Adam Smith Business School, invites students from diverse disciplines across the university to form interdisciplinary teams. Participants have been from Adam Smith Business School, School of Engineering, School of Computing Science, School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, School of Humanities, School of Psychology and Neuroscience, and the School of Social and Political Sciences.
The teams tackle complex, real-world sustainability challenges set by industry and civic partners, such as Mott MacDonald and Glasgow City Council. Recent topics have included:
- Addressing Scope 3 emissions for Glasgow City Council.
- Exploring Whole Life Value and its application to carbon reporting in urban settings.
After weeks of intense preparation, the finalists can showcase their exceptional abilities in creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and presentation. Their work can be a powerful demonstration of theirdedication, talent, ability to find solutions to complex issues, andpassion for sustainability. The finals also offer an excellent opportunity for socialising and networking, bringing together students, academic staff, and public and industry professionals.
The top three winning teams receive a voucher, with the first-place winner also gaining the unique opportunity to bring their proposal to life, supported by our external partners. The outcomes of their work are then presented to both external partners and academic staff, highlighting the innovative and impactful solutions developed by their team.
A winner student had commented: “It was fantastic collaborating with students from various disciplines and age groups. Winning the chance to collaborate with Glasgow City Council and Mott MacDonald is exhilarating. I am eager for the opportunities that will arise from this Challenge”.

Recognising and enriching curricula with a global perspective: Decolonising the curriculum in a business school

Action 1
Recently, I led an initiative to encourage colleagues in our Business School to reflect and engage in decolonising the curriculum and enabled them to share good practice. I would like to build to share with this community (as well as others) how we went about it and our experience. Moreover, I will also challenge myself to reflect and educate myself more in order to improve my own teaching practice to be even more globally focussed and inclusive.
Action 2
If there is to be a workshop/ symposium, I would like to contribute to a session, either by facilitating a discussion group or present a working paper. This would depend on the time because of my teaching commitments. Hopefully we will decide on a time that would be convenient for all.
Action 3
Since this action is not fully under my control, I am putting this as 3rd. I would like to make myself available to give a talk/ lecture for anyone in this group who would like to invite me online. Possible topics would be around development economics, EDI (equality diversity inclusion), thriving in a multicultural world/ university. I am a jack of all trades when it comes to teaching and up for a challenge. At the same time, I would like to invite anyone who is willing to give a talk to my students or my colleagues, depending on the specific topic, which would be appropriate for this project of ours.
